Lenoir City Lawsuits

Uncontrolled growth is an issue that concerns many of us in Loudon County. However, I believe that a lawsuit should be a last resort, not a constant threat. Lawyers are profiting handsomely at the taxpayers expense where we should be looking at arbitration as the first option, not one imposed by courts.

"Loudon County filed a lawsuit in February 2023 against Lenoir City, alleging the city illegally annexed two unincorporated properties in 2020 and 2022 without county approval, thereby stripping the county of its rights and interests. The lawsuit argues that these annexations violated state law and a 2005 inter-local agreement requiring county consent for such actions. The county seeks a court ruling that the annexations are invalid. The case was ongoing as of early September 2025, with a potential trial date set for November 7th."

Economic Development Agency

On at least two occasions there have been votes to strip (or significantly reduce) funding for this agency tasked with bringing new jobs to Loudon County. June 26, 2023: The Loudon County Commission voted to withdraw from the interlocal agreement with the EDA. Per the agreement, this action required a two-year written notice, making the withdrawal effective on August 1, 2025.

  • Summer 2024: Tensions continued to escalate, with some commissioners expressing frustration over the EDA's actions, which Commissioner Van Shaver called "detrimental to Loudon County".
  • August 2025: A vote on accelerating the timeline to end EDA funding was tied. However, the county's formal funding separation from the EDA went into effect as planned.
  • June 2, 2025: Amid the transition, the county commission debated rescinding their letter of intent to withdraw funding. Some commissioners expressed concern that severing ties with the EDA could jeopardize millions of dollars in federal grants for other county departments. The motion to withdraw was ultimately not rescinded.

The real question is why is there animosity between the County and the EDA and shouldn't each body accept their vested interest in supporting new jobs in Loudon County?
